Unique Ways to Announce an Engagement

You’ve dated, spent your time learning who you didn’t want to be with, and then it happens. The person that is the center of your life finally gets down on one knee and asks the question that is going to change your world.

Now that you’re engaged, how do you let people know about the good news? How should you announce your engagement on Facebook or other social media platform? Check out these ideas for how to break the news to friends and family in a unique and fun way!

Tell Important People First

First off, your mom should not learn about your engagement through social media. No matter how you plan on telling the public about your engagement, you should always let your closest family and friends know first.

You can either plan a large get together to break the good news, or you can share it in a series of one-on-one conversations. No matter which way you plan on sharing the news with the people that mean the most to you, let them know around the same time so that no one feels left out.

Schedule Your Time

When planning your post on social media, make sure that you have the time to manage all of the comments and messages that will come your way. You don’t want to be overwhelmed with comments and wedding questions.

Traditional Pictures

When it comes to announcement photos, two typical styles are used most: the “ring” picture and the couple pose. First and foremost, make sure to use a picture of both of you in your announcement because people want to see the happy couple! You should definitely show off that sparkler too, whether it’s visible in your couple pose or you include a second picture of just the ring. Just keep in mind that the ring picture should be secondary to seeing both of you happy together.

Think about the outfits that you’re wearing as well as the location you’re taking the picture. One of the best places to take your engagement picture is outside in nature. Nature shots can give you clear and clean backdrops without being distracting.

When setting up a pose for your picture, remember that you don’t have to pose like it’s high school prom. You’re allowed to hug, snuggle, and kiss in your picture. Just make sure the kiss is nice and cute-no one wants to see you making out!

Unique Ways to Announce

It’s always nice to have the typical traditional announcement, but if that’s not you, change your announcement to match who you are as a couple. Here are a few things that will make your announcement one of a kind.

  • Location - You’ll often find that the typical engagement picture is in a neutral place, often in nature. If that’s not you, do something else. Find a place that speaks to you and take a picture there. Anywhere from a pool to an amusement park can work for you. Feel free to experiment and find something that speaks to you both.
  • Hobbies and Interests - You are an individual with a long list of hobbies, talents, and interests. Your engagement announcement, and the rest of your wedding, should be uniquely yours. While random people on Pinterest might not like your Dr. Who themed announcement, to you and your finance, it’s the perfect thing to show that you’re ready to journey to the end of time with each other. Let your hobbies and interests show as part of your announcement.
  • Movement - Most announcements have the couple standing or sitting and looking happy, but that’s not required. You can walk, run, dance, or just move. Do whatever you want to show how the two of you will do anything together.
  • Digital Announcement - You’re posting this online, which means that you can do more than just a picture. Consider uploading a gif or short video. Even a small bit of background animation can add a nice twist to your engagement photos and make them memorable.

What Not To Do

Your announcement should be clear, clean, and easy to understand. There are some things that you should avoid doing as part of your announcement.

  • Hashtags - The entire point of hashtags is to tag posts. This makes it so that your posts are clumped together and searched by that topic. Using hashtags in your announcement post can detract from your engagement and lead to a cluttered-feeling post. Keep things simple and remember that the point of your announcement is to announce, not to gain extra likes or thumbs up from hashtags.
  • Wordy Stories - Your engagement story is something that you will share for the rest of your life, but you don’t have to start sharing it right away. One of the biggest mistakes from couples is sharing too much of their story in an announcement post. The general public wants to know about the great news of your engagement. They don’t want to have to sort through the two-year history of how you met, all of the dates you went on, and the play by play of how the question was even asked. Keep it simple. If people want to know, they’ll ask.
  • Ghosting - After you share your post, you need to stay around for the fallout of everyone congratulating you and any questions they might have. Running away and ignoring social media after you share your engagement may offend some people. They might feel forgotten or disengaged.
  • Overworked Concepts - Avoid overworking your announcement or using a weird concept. Trying too hard to be overly unique may mean that your friends and family don’t understand what is being announced. Making your announcement look like a fake magazine cover, having your pets propose to each other, painfully contorted couples yoga poses, or posing the future bride as the “old ball and chain” with shackles is not a good idea. Keep your announcement clear, clean, and simple.
